Electricity theft linked to illegal crypto mining operation in Perak

IPOH: Police have uncovered an illegal cryptocurrency mining operation at a residential area in Teluk Intan, Perak.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said that the joint operation on Wednesday (Nov 5) was carried out by the police with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Cyber Security Malaysia (CSM) at Taman Lagenda.

He said the 66 crypto mining machines confiscated were worth about RM80,000, while the electricity losses were yet to be confirmed.

“The ops were carried out following a public tip-off, and intelligence gathered.

“TNB’s inspection confirmed the presence of illegal electricity connections used to power the crypto mining machines,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Nov 6).

ACP Bakri said that further checks revealed several rooms on the premises had been modified into special compartments housing the machines.

“Police seized 66 crypto mining machines, several modems and other supporting equipment suspected to have been used for the operation.

“All seized items were taken to the district police headquarters for further investigation,” he said.

The case was being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 37 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 (Act 447).

“Investigations are ongoing to identify the owner of the premises and the individuals involved in the operation,” he added.
