Zayn Rayyan's mother files appeal against conviction, sentence

KUALA LUMPUR: The mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin has filed a notice of appeal against the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court that sentenced her to five years' jail for neglecting her autistic six-year-old son.

Lawyer Haresh Mahadevan, representing Ismanira Abdul Manaf, 30, confirmed the notice was filed at the Shah Alam High Court, Selangor when contacted.

"Yes, we filed a notice of appeal today," he said on Monday (Nov 3).

Ismanira is appealing against her conviction and the decision by Sessions Court judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh on Oct 31, when she found that the defence had failed to create reasonable doubt, leading to the five-year-sentence that took effect immediately after a suspension of sentence was rejected.

Her husband Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, 30, who was charged with the same offence, was acquitted.

Ismanira was also sentenced to 120 hours of community service to be completed within six months after her jail sentence ends.

Both parents were charged with neglecting Zayn Rayyan in a way that might result in physical harm around Block R, Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai to the nearby stream between noon on Dec 5 and 9.55pm on Dec 6 2023 after their son's body was found near the stream after he was reported missing on Dec 5. – Bernama
