Two drown as 4WD swept away by swift-flowing river in Ranau

KOTA KINABALU: Two men drowned after their four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle got swept away by strong currents at Sungai Moroli in Kampung Narawang in Ranau on Saturday (Nov 1).

The 69-year-old driver and 61-year-old passenger were found dead about 10km away from where the vehicle was swept away.

Ranau Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Assistant Fire Superintendent Rantey Fred said the first victim was found at 11.18 am, while the second victim was found at 11.48 am, about a kilometre away from the first victim.

"We received a distress call from the public at 10.22am.

"The victims were in a 4WD and were attempting to cross Sungai Moroli, but the strong current caused the vehicle to be swept away," he said.

The vehicle was found about 200m from where it was swept away, but the victims were not inside.

A search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched with the help of 25 villagers and two police officers from the Ranau district police.
