Authorities take down over 6,000 scams since 2023

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 6,000 content and advertisements of scams have been taken down since 2023.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had taken down the online materials based on applications made by the Police Cyber Response Centre (PSRC).

"The PCRC monitors scam content and advertisements 24 hours a day.

"Since 2023, they have called 6,184 contents, of which have been taken down by the MCMC," he told reporters at the CCID headquarters on Thursday (Oct 30).

Of the total, Comm Rusdi said 1,073 contents were investment scams, followed by loan scams (4,557) and purchase and rent of ATM cards (554).

"This year alone, 3,179 materials have been taken down as of September," he added.

He said the PSRC not only monitor online content, but they also analyse, conduct profiling, make police reports and investigate scam-related content online.

"We advise the public to be wary of various scam tactics, especially on social media.

"For example, in investment scams, the scammers would promise high returns within a short time. It is not an opportunity but a trap. Don't fall for it.

"Check with the relevant authorities, such as the Securities Commission, before investing in any scheme," he said.

As for loan scams, the victims would be required to make initial payments before the loans could be "approved", he said.

"When the payment is made by the victims, the scammers will not be heard of again," he said.

Comm Rusdi also cautioned the public against lending or renting out their ATM cards to a third party.

"It is an offence under Section 424 and 137 of the Penal Code.

"We will take stern action against those who do so," he said.
