35 cows seized at a GOF roadblock in Perlis

IPOH: About RM245,000 worth of cows have been seized by the General Operations Force (GOF) during a roadblock at KM24 of Jalan Chuping in Perlis.

GOF Northern Brigade commander Senior Asst Comm Shahrum Hashim said some 35 cows were found at the back of a trailer during the roadblock, which was held under the Op Taring Wawasan operation on Thursday (Oct 30).

"There were two men, including the driver, aged 23 and 49, in the vehicle.

"They were suspected of transporting the farm animals without legal documents," he said in a statement.

"The driver failed to show any documents to transport the animals," he added.

ACP Shahrum said the cows are believed to have been brought into the country from Thailand to be sold in local markets.

"The case has been handed over to the Padang Besar Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department for the next course of action.

"The case will be investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animal Act," he said, adding that those found guilty can be fined not more than RM15,000 or up to one year in jail or both.

"The GOF is committed and will continue with its efforts to stop smuggling activities into the country at Kedah, Perak and Perlis," he added.
