KUALA LUMPUR: The celebration of Deepavali in the country is regarded as a symbol of unity in diversity, which has always been the cornerstone of Malaysia’s strength, says Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo (pic).
As Malaysians celebrate the festival, he said it was a moment for all to embrace the spirit of unity in everyday life.
“Malaysia Madani demands we build an inclusive and respectful society that is strengthening trust with one another.
“Unity is not a mere slogan; instead, it is the way we work, think and interact, whether at the office, in digital space or in everyday life.
“When the lamp is lit in every Indian home across the country, it carries a symbol of hope, prosperity and love shared by all Malaysians,” he said in his opening remarks at a Deepavali Open House jointly organised by the Digital Ministry and the National Unity Ministry yesterday.
Gobind said the Deepavali celebration represents the triumph of good over evil, truth over falsehood and light over darkness.
“This is why the government’s theme for its Deepavali Open House this year is ‘Cahaya Madani Sinar Perpaduan’ (Madani Shines, the Light of Unity).
“This brings the message that light is not only a symbol of Deepavali but also a symbol of enlightenment, hope and unity among Malaysians within the Madani framework,” he said.
Gobind said the Indian community in Malaysia is more than just a community; it is part of the country’s history.
“Since before independence, the Indian community has played an important role in building the foundation of this country, beginning with plantations, education and the civil service, and into the professional and modern technology fields now.
“The big names from the Indian community in the fields of law, medicine, science, sports, arts and politics have coloured the journey of the country’s progress.
“They are not just a part of Malaysia’s story but creators of important chapters in the history of this beloved nation,” he added.
Later, Gobind told reporters that the open house event exceeded expectations and drew a crowd of over 5,000.
“I want to thank the Prime Minister and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, for being here with us,” he added.
Among those who were present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.
