Former USM vice-chancellor hurt in dawn robbery, suspect arrested


GEORGE TOWN: Former Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) vice-chancellor Tan Sri Prof Emeritus Dzulkifli Abdul Razak was injured in the head after being assaulted by unknown assailants who robbed him near his residence in Taman Pekaka at dawn on Friday (Oct 17).

According to Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in a post on its official Facebook page, the robbery occurred when Dzulkifli was returning home after performing the Subuh prayers.

The post also stated that the former rector of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) suffered a head injury and received 15 stitches after being pistol-whipped by the suspect.

Meanwhile, a statement from a family member shared by UUM in the comments section confirmed that Dzulkifli was otherwise safe and recovering from the trauma of the incident.

Family members also said they will share further information after the police investigation is completed and expressed gratitude for the concern of all parties.

Meanwhile, Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail confirmed the robbery in Taman Pekaka when contacted by Bernama.

He stated that police have arrested a male suspect to assist in the investigation, and the suspect will be brought to court on Saturday (Oct 18) to obtain a remand order.

"The operations room of the Northeast district police headquarters received a call at 7.01am informing of the robbery at 6.45am, where a 75-year-old victim suffered a head injury.

"Following the incident, police arrested a man for investigations to identify the motive for the robbery and the weapon used by the suspect," he said. – Bernama
