THE Mid-Autumn Festival is over and people in mainland China are sharing new and inventive ways of finishing their mooncakes, sparking a mix of praise and revulsion, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Based on videos shared on Chinese social media, some users are frying rice using leftover mooncakes while others are adding the pastry into their rice cookers to make porridge.

There are also videos of people stir-frying mooncakes with chilli as a side dish.

The less adventurous are treating mooncakes more like a pastry by dipping them into coffee before eating.

“The taste of mid-Autumn is sweet from the mouth to the heart; but rich enough to make your soul feel weary,” one Internet user wrote.

While many praised social media users for coming up with ways to not waste food, others have expressed disgust at the weird ways mooncakes were eaten.

“To the inventor of these dishes, they should be exiled to outer space. Thank you for your cooperation,” another user quipped.

> A rock by a river in Henan, China, which has been painted to look like a snake, has sent tourists into a panic, forcing it to be covered up, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Videos and photos taken at the Yuhuang Valley scenic area showed a painted boulder, complete with piercing eyes and scales looking like a snake’s head emerging from the water – a sight which startled many visitors.

Netizens mostly agreed the snake head looked too frightening and should be covered. However, others felt it was a pity to hide it.

Staff working at the tourist spot have now covered the boulder and plan to repaint it with less scary designs such as auspicious clouds, a dragon or a tortoise.

A staff member explained that the original intention of the snake-head design was to help “bring the natural landscape to life” but admitted that they had failed to consider any potential negative psychological impact.
