People mover: From July to early October, the upgraded Aerotrain transported 5.33 million passengers and clocked 39,900km.
KL International Airport’s Aerotrain system has achieved full operational stability after experiencing 19 technical incidents between July 2 and Sept 30, says Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.
He told Parliament yesterday that the Aerotrain, which resumed operations on July 1 following major upgrades, is currently in a two-year defect liability period.
“Overall operational availability since resumption until Oct 8 stood at 99.19%. Stability continues to improve, with the system recording full availability in recent weeks,” he said.
From July to early October, he added, the upgraded Aerotrain transported 5.33 million passengers and clocked 39,900km.
“Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is working closely with train manufacturer Alstom to ensure smooth operations and prompt technical responses when issues arise,” he said.
Responding to a question from Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut) on frequent breakdowns and safety measures, Hasbi said the reported incidents were caused by both technical and human factors, including signalling faults and passengers attempting to force open train doors.
To address this, he said technical officers are now stationed onboard to resolve issues immediately.
Responding to a supplementary question on penalties for recurring failures, Hasbi said Alstom could be penalised for up to RM190,000 per month if it fails to meet the required performance standards.
The manufacturer is obligated to maintain 100% availability during single-train operations and at least 99.6% when two trains are in service, he added.
As of now, he said train performance is at 100%, and MAHB would continue working with the manufacturer to uphold the highest operational standards.
