MCMC to swiftly carry out PM directive to strengthen country's data security, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will immediately carry out Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's directive to strengthen the country's data security through the implementation of the Sovereign AI Cloud policy.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said this will be implemented with the guidance of the National Security Council (NSC), the Digital Ministry and the Digital Department to ensure that the control and management of the country's strategic data is more secure in relation to the Sovereign AI Cloud.

"It takes into account policy changes in several countries, such as the United States, besides ensuring a stronger data security ecosystem, including classified information, in accordance with the Official Secrets Act,” he said.

He told reporters this after attending the Ministerial Forum: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence On The Future Workforce, held in conjunction with the Young Future Leaders Summit (iFuture) 2025, which was also attended by Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

Fahmi said the Sovereign AI Cloud will become one of the key pillars in safeguarding government data and sensitive information from cyber threats and ensuring that the country's digital governance remains sovereign.

Meanwhile, regarding the request by the Education MInistry for the MCMC to take down video clips related to the gang rape case involving students at a school in Melaka that had gone viral on social media recently, Fahmi said that the MCMC would issue an official statement regarding the matter.

At the same time, he advised the public to be careful in sharing content on digital platforms regarding the matter.

"We must always be careful. If any content violates laws such as the Child Act, the Communications and Multimedia Act or the Penal Code, action can be taken against those who disseminate it,” he said.

Earlier, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the action was taken to ensure that the video did not continue to be disseminated.- Bernama
