GEORGE TOWN: Penang continues to keep a close watch on the influenza situation in the state, which remains under control despite an increase in cases nationwide.
State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said a total of 18 influenza clusters were recorded from January up to the 40th Epidemiological Week (EW) this year -- one less than the 19 clusters reported during the corresponding period last year.
"We are aware of the Health Ministry’s statement on the current influenza trend in Malaysia. In Penang, continuous monitoring is being carried out to ensure the spread remains contained,” he told reporters after attending the Mental Health Matters programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia here on Sunday (Oct 12).
On Thursday (Oct 9), the Health Ministry reported 97 influenza clusters involving influenza A and B nationwide in EW 40/2025, up sharply from 14 clusters reported in the previous week.
Penang was among the five states with the highest number of reported clusters, with 10 clusters recorded. Selangor topped the list with 43 clusters, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (15), Johor (nine) and Kedah (five).
Gooi said the year-end rise in influenza cases was not unusual, noting that it was part of a recurring seasonal trend.
He advised the public, especially parents, not to panic but to remain alert and practise preventive measures to avoid infection.
"People should not misunderstand. Influenza is not like Covid-19. It is a manageable illness, but it requires vigilance. Parents whose children show symptoms such as fever should seek treatment immediately,” he said.
Gooi added that free influenza vaccination is available for senior citizens aged 60 and above with at least one comorbidity, such as hypertension or diabetes, and encouraged high-risk groups to get vaccinated as a preventive measure.
On the use of face masks, he said it was not mandatory but advisable for those exhibiting symptoms.
"If you’re unwell, wear a mask to protect others. The key message is don’t panic, but take the necessary preventive steps,” he added.- Bernama
