IPOH: A 43-year-old company van driver was fined RM8,000 for damaging seven vehicles at the Ipoh Railway Station.
R. Vikneshwaran pleaded guilty when the charge was read before Magistrate Anis Hanini Abdullah on Thursday (Oct 9).
The charge stated that he drove a van without due care and attention at the KTM Ipoh Station compound at about 2.54am on Oct 5.
He was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous driving.
Offenders can be fined between RM5,000 and RM10,000, jailed up to 12 months, or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Amal Aziemah Abd Kohar asked the court to impose the maximum fine.
She said the incident caused severe damage to seven vehicles.
“The incident happened at a public place, and therefore a maximum fine should be imposed as a lesson to the accused and to the community,” she said.
The unrepresented accused requested a lower fine in mitigation.
He said he is the sole breadwinner, has two school-going children and elderly parents to support.
Anis imposed a fine of RM8,000, in default two months’ jail.
“Your traffic offence will be recorded on your driving licence,” she said.
The facts stated that he damaged six other parked vehicles and the company van by driving without due care.
He paid the fine.
Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said on Tuesday (Oct 7) that the driver lost control while turning into a junction.
He said the van crashed into several parked cars and added no injuries were reported and the driver tested negative for drugs.
Videos of the damaged vehicles have gone viral on social media.
