Teen motorcyclist killed in crash on Senai-Desaru Highway

JOHOR BARU: A teenager was killed after the motorcycle he was riding collided head-on with a car from the opposite direction along the Senai-Desaru Highway.

The collision caused both his and his friend's motorcycles to catch fire, police said.

Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said a report was received about the crash at KM46 of the highway at about 1am on Sunday (Oct 5), involving a car and two motorcycles.

"The accident is believed to have occurred when a car driven by a 44-year-old man was travelling towards Ulu Tiram, while the 17-year-old victim and his 15-year-old friend were coming from the opposite direction.

"The victim veered into the oncoming lane and collided with the car, causing him to fall onto the road.

"His friend, who was behind him on another motorcycle, was unable to avoid crashing into the victim's machine," he said in a statement.

He said both motorcycles then caught fire, possibly from a fuel leak following the impact.

"The victim was pronounced dead at the scene from severe head trauma, while his friend sustained minor injuries.

"The car driver was unharmed," he added.

ACP Sohaimi said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

"I advise the public to always remain patient, obey traffic rules and regulations, and stay alert while on the road. Drivers should be courteous and cautious at all times.

"Any witnesses with information about the incident may contact the police at 07-3864222 to assist in the investigation," he said.

Earlier, an 11-second video went viral on Facebook showing traffic at a standstill following the crash and subsequent fire.
