Warisan vows to fix Sabah’s water problem within a year if returned to power

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan has vowed to resolve Sabah’s long-standing water supply problem within a year if they are returned to power in the coming state election.

Its president, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, said the pledge would be a top priority for the party, as water supply continues to be one of the most pressing daily struggles faced by people across the state.

“If we are given the mandate, within one year I will resolve the water problem in Sabah,” he told the crowd during the launch of Warisan’s state election campaign slogan “Selamatkan Sabah” or “Save Sabah” in Tawau on Saturday (Oct 4).

He said this is not an empty promise because he knows where the problem lies.

“The treatment plants are there, the water is there — but the issue is in distribution.

“We will increase treatment capacity, ensure water reaches people’s homes, and investigate why water is being sold from lorries instead of flowing through the pipes.

“If any company is profiteering from selling water meant for the public, we will take action,” he said.

Shafie said Warisan’s plan includes both short and long-term solutions, with the latter involving the construction of a new dam to guarantee a sustainable water supply for future generations.

“In the short term, we will widen and upgrade our treatment and distribution systems so that every household has access to clean water.

“But in the long term, we will build a dam — not only to secure water for homes and agriculture but also to support electricity generation.

He added that with proper planning, there is no reason Sabahans should continue to suffer without water.

Shafie said Warisan’s mission would also extend beyond water to address Sabah’s chronic infrastructure issues, including poor roads and unreliable electricity supply.

“Billions are spent every year, yet roads are still filled with potholes.

“If we form the government, I will personally inspect these projects — from Tawau to Sandakan, Beluran, from Telupid to Kinabatangan, and also in Sipitang.

“Any contractor who fails to deliver will have their contracts terminated," he said.

Shafie urged Sabahans to stand united and use their votes to bring meaningful change.

“We must be clear in our minds, in our direction and in our actions. What matters is the future of Sabahans and that the government is clean and able,” he said.
