PETALING JAYA: Donald Trump’s attendance as President of the United States at the 47th Asean Summit should not be seen as an endorsement of his policies but as part of Malaysia’s diplomatic mandate, says Tunku Nashrul Abaidah.
The Prime Minister’s senior press secretary said the summit, to take place in October, will be historic, as Malaysia, as Asean Chair, is responsible for ensuring that all dialogue partners come to the negotiating table.
“The presence of Donald Trump, along with other world leaders in Kuala Lumpur, is part of the diplomatic mandate entrusted to Malaysia.
“This is not about recognising the personal policies of any leader, but about recognising Asean and Malaysia’s leadership as chairs,” he said in a briefing.
Tunku Nashrul said turning away Trump from the Summit would not resolve any issue, adding that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) took note of views expressed, including local political figures calling for the invitation to be withdrawn on the grounds of his stance on the Palestinian issue.
“Malaysia’s position on Palestine has never changed; it has always been clear, firm, and consistent.
“The Prime Minister himself has been one of the strongest voices in the world, defending Gaza, condemning Israel’s atrocities, and leading the moral voice of the Muslim ummah on the international stage,” he pointed out.
Tunku Nashrul said Malaysia also seeks to ensure Asean’s voice goes beyond geopolitics, focusing instead on a common agenda, strengthening economic cooperation, attracting strategic investments, expanding trade and accelerating the region’s integration as a global economic power.
“This is the leadership that Malaysia offers, one that upholds the principle of universal justice, remains steadfast in defending Palestine, and shoulders the great responsibility as Asean Chair to build a region that is prosperous, stable, and peaceful.
“The government will ensure that the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur stands as proof that Malaysia can lead with wisdom, be outspoken in defending the oppressed, be resolute in championing the people’s interests and be prudent in balancing global diplomacy,” said Tunku Nashrul.
