Monsoon transition brings storm risks


KUALA LUMPUR: The monsoon transition phase is expected to start on Sept 30 and last until November, ending the southwest monsoon season that began on May 10 this year.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said during this transition phase, the country will experience weak winds from various directions.

“This condition may lead to the formation of thunderstorm clouds, which are typically accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds over a short period, especially in the afternoon and early evening,” it said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

The areas most likely to be affected include the west and interior regions of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as the west of Sabah and Sarawak.

“This weather phenomenon may cause flash floods, fallen trees, water surges, and damage to weak structures,” MetMalaysia added.
