Four missing after boat sinks in Saratok, six others rescued

SIBU: Four workers are feared missing after a boat carrying 10 people capsized while crossing the Krian River in Saratok on Friday (Sept 26) evening.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said it received a distress call regarding the incident at 6.13pm.

“Preliminary reports indicated that at around 5.30pm, 10 employees of ZCCC Construction Sdn Bhd were travelling in a boat from Jeti Sesang to Jeti Pusa after work when it sank mid-river,” the department said in a statement.

Six victims managed to save themselves by clinging to the side of a vessel before being rescued by another boat. However, four others remain unaccounted for.

The missing victims have been identified as a local, Mohd Asfar Sulaiman, 25, along with three Indonesian nationals: Gunawan Pawadi, 35, Budianto Yapani, 50, and Karyono, 41.

Those rescued were Sandi Putra, 26; Amirul, 20; Tadin, 50; Diki Sanjaya, 22; Dwi Moko, 39; and Krisna, 37, — all Indonesian nationals.

The department said a search and rescue operation is being carried out in coordination with the police, other enforcement agencies, and local villagers.

“The operation is focused on combing the river and its surrounding areas to locate the four missing victims,” it added.

A police report on the incident has been lodged at the Saratok police station.
