Cable thief trips up

Suspect rams police vehicle in vain escape attempt

KOTA KINABALU: A suspected cable thief resorted to violence by repeatedly ramming a police vehicle in an attempt to escape before being apprehended by the police in Tuaran, near here.

Tuaran OCPD Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin said in the 3pm incident on Thursday, cops conducting a hunt for the suspect noticed his vehicle near the CKS Plaza area and approached it.

“When our officers introduced themselves as cops, the suspect, who was in the driver’s seat, reversed his car and rammed into the police vehicle a few times to escape,” he said in a statement.

The team successfully broke the suspect’s car window to prevent his escape and removed him from the vehicle.

Noraidin said that they subdued the suspect after a brief scuffle, using minimal force. No shots were fired.

He said that the authorities believe the suspect was connected to multiple cable thefts in the area and could assist in investigations into several cases.

He also urged the public to not speculate about the arrest, as it could affect police investigations.

A video showing the police apprehending the man following a tense confrontation was widely circulated on social media.

Supt Noraidin also urged the public to contact the police hotline at 088-794313 or to go to the nearest police station if they have information on any suspicious or criminal activities in their area.
