Boy, 9, dies after falling into uncovered sewage pit at Negri school

SEREMBAN: A nine-year-old pupil who fell into a sewer in his school in Lenggeng near here has died while receiving treatment at the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital (TJH).

Negri Sembilan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the boy fell into an uncovered sewer and was rescued by Fire and Rescue Department personnel earlier Saturday (Sept 27).

"Based on eyewitness accounts, the victim fell into the sewer located behind a block in the school around 9.20am.

"He was rescued by a team from the Fire and Rescue Department and later rushed to HTJ for treatment.

"However, he died while receiving treatment," he said in a statement.

He said the boy was in school for its annual sports meet.

DCP Alzafny said a postmortem would be carried out to establish the victim's cause of death.

"For now, we have classified the case as an accident and ruled out foul play as there were no criminal elements involved," he said.

He advised the public not to speculate on the incident as this could jeopardise investigations.
