CYBERJAYA: Tan Sri Azam Baki has suggested that a recently seconded deputy public prosecutor (DPP) be placed on temporary leave following his arrest over suspected drug offences.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner said the matter has been referred to Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar.
Azam then added that this is because the officer was seconded to the MACC from the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).
“Normally, in cases such as this, I will propose to the Attorney General that the officer be rested first so that he does not handle any prosecution work in court while the case is ongoing,” he told reporters at the Integrity and Leadership Day 2025 event in Cyberjaya on Wednesday (Sept 24).
Azam confirmed that the DPP had only reported for duty at the MACC last week on attachment from the AGC, and stressed that the case is being handled entirely by the police.
“This is an unforeseen matter and the case is being investigated by the police. We leave it to the police and I have also spoken to the Attorney General. If there is a case, the police can take it to court,” he said.
Asked whether background vetting was carried out before the officer’s attachment, Azam said that was under the AGC’s purview.
“He has already served at the AGC, where I believe he underwent all the necessary vetting. It is likely this happened after the vetting process.
Drug tests are conducted on all civil servants, including DPPs. To me, this is his personal action in consuming drugs and so on,” he added.
The officer was arrested by police at his residence on Tuesday (Sept 23), barely a week after reporting for duty at the MACC. A search of the premises uncovered substances believed to be drugs.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the suspect has been remanded for three days until Thursday (September 25).
The case is being investigated under Sections 12(1) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
