Two conferred TAR UMT honorary doctorates

KUALA LUMPUR: Two prominent personalities have been conferred Honorary Doctorates of Philosophy by the Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).

They are former Cabinet minister Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting and Public Bank Bhd managing director and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tay Ah Lek.

In recognition of their contributions to nation-building, education and financial stewardship, Ong was conferred the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Economics while Tay was conferred the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Business.

Ong, the former housing and local government minister, said the accolade was especially meaningful as he was once a pre-university student there.

“To stand here today as TAR UMT confers this recognition upon me truly feels like I am coming home,” said Ong, the former TAR College chairman from 2004 to 2011.

Equally important, the former MCA president said, is how TAR College – now TAR UMT – has been true to its mission of providing affordable and quality education.

“For countless young Malaysians from financially challenged families, this institution was the gateway to a brighter future, breaking the chains of poverty and opening doors to new opportunities,” he said.

Ong has also served as Special Envoy to China and the Malaysia-China Business Council chairman for over a decade.

He was presented with the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Economics by TARC Education Foundation Board of Trustees chairman Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Meanwhile, TAR UMT Board of Governors and Alumni Council chairman Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy presented Tay with the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Business.

In his speech, Tay paid tribute to Public Bank founder Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow, whom he described as his “lifetime mentor”.

“Mentorship is not simply about guidance but inspiration, trust and belief.

“The world is truly at your feet once you find the right mentor and that chemistry exists.

“I was blessed beyond measure to have that bond as the lessons imparted continue to guide me, and the opportunities he (Teh) entrusted me with continue to inspire me,” he said.

Tay expressed pride in being associated with TAR UMT, alongside being able to witness the institution shaping a Malaysian workforce that aspires for excellence.

“TAR UMT’s remarkable achievements are a source of pride for Malaysia.

“It is a shining example of what vision, perseverance and service to society can achieve,” he added.
