JOHOR BARU: A soldier and his friend were badly injured when they were slashed after a fight broke out due to a misunderstanding several days ago.
It is learnt that the soldier, a 28-year-old rank and file personnel from an army camp here, and his friend, 38, sustained multiple slashes after they were set upon by a group of armed suspects at Taman Puteri in Kota Masai, Pasir Gudang.
Sources said that the two groups were supposed to meet to resolve an issue when a heated argument ensued, resulting in the other group attacking the duo with parang.
During the attack, the suspects tried to use a car to ram into the two victims.
The assailants fled the scene after the incident, while members of the public called for an ambulance.
Subsequently, a team of officers from the Seri Alam district police headquarters managed to track down the suspects and within hours arrested three people aged between 25 and 42.
It was learnt that the duo sustained more than a dozen cuts and underwent several operations after the brutal attack.
Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak confirmed that three suspects have been arrested, with two of them having criminal records, while one tested positive for methamphetamine.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt.
In another unrelated case, a brawl broke out among patrons at an entertainment centre here while the police were raiding the place.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident took place on Sept 14, when a team from Bukit Aman’s Narcotics Crime Investigation Department raided the premises in the city centre.
“Initial investigations revealed that the commotion occurred between several individuals while police were conducting checks inside the outlet.
“The incident was sparked by a misunderstanding among the individuals,” he said here on Monday.
ACP Raub said police are still in the process of identifying those involved in the incident, which is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine or both, upon conviction.
He also advised the public not to spread unverified videos or information related to the case.
