ALOR SETAR: A motion has been tabled for PAS to assume leadership of Perikatan Nasional and put forward a candidate for prime minister.
The motion, presented by PAS Youth information chief Khairul Nadzir Helmi Azhar, will be debated at the party's 71st muktamar on Sept 15 and 16.
The proposal was passed unanimously.
The move is seen as a statement of intent by PAS Youth, signalling the party's readiness not only to consolidate its position within Perikatan but also to chart the course for national leadership ahead of the 16th General Election.
It is also viewed as a response to its coalition partner Bersatu, whose Youth and Women's wings nominated party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as candidate for prime minister if Perikatan wins the next general election.
PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said the party has many potential candidates, as several of its leaders have experience both state and federal level.
He cited the example of PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor as possible candidates.
"I think the best is the top PAS leadership. They have their own track record as federal ministers or mentris besar," he told reporters after the conclusion of the PAS Youth muktamar.
Meanwhile, Kuala Terengganu PAS Youth representative Abdul Rahman Che Mat urged the wing to remain vocal, consistent and proactive in championing the Palestinian cause.
He also called on members to express their dissatisfaction and protest against the upcoming visit of United States President Donald Trump to Malaysia for the 47th Asean Summit and related meetings in October.
"We strongly oppose Trump's presence, as he has played a complicit role in the atrocities taking place in Gaza and Palestine," Abdul Rahman said.
PAS Youth also submitted motions to continue the momentum to reject the proposed Urban Renewal Act and also to defend state rights over rare earth element (REE) resources, ensuring that the majority of profits are returned to respective states.
