KUALA LUMPUR: The government will soon launch the National Defence Industry Policy (DIPN), a strategic framework to drive innovation and reduce reliance on foreign technology in the defence sector, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The policy, approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday (Sept 10), is designed to enhance the defence industry’s competitiveness and ensure the armed forces are equipped with modern capabilities..

The Defence Minister said the ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s defence capabilities through science and technology, describing it as a critical necessity rather than an option.

"As part of this effort, the ministry will empower the Defence Science and Technology Research Institute (STRIDE) to spearhead research and development (R&D) in the sector,” he said in his speech before launching the Mid-Term Review of the Defence White Paper on Thursday (Sept 11).

"To support STRIDE’s role, the ministry will also establish the Defence Science and Technology Advisory Council (MPSTP), which will provide strategic direction for national defence technology," he added.

He said working closely with academia and industry players, STRIDE is expected to ensure that the country’s future armed forces are equipped with modern and contextually relevant technologies.

"In line with this commitment, the ministry will also push forward the Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP), focusing on key areas such as autonomous and robotic systems, weapon systems, cyber-electromagnetic capabilities, and aerospace systems.

"Against the backdrop of an increasingly complex international security landscape, Malaysia must develop a resilient supply chain that reduces overreliance on foreign sources, the ministry stressed.

"Strengthened collaboration between the government, universities, and local companies will be central to achieving this goal," he said.
