Defence Minister says South China Sea disputes must be resolved diplomatically

KUALA LUMPUR: Disputes in the South China Sea must be resolved through diplomatic channels, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Defence Minister said such efforts must align with the principles of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

"The country also reaffirms its commitment to working actively through Asean and the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) to develop a Code of Conduct (COC).

The agreement aims to build mutual trust and reduce the risk of armed conflict in the region," he said in his speech before launching the Mid-Term Review of the Defence White Paper on Thursday (Sept 11).

He noted concerns over the increasingly serious challenges posed by disputes in the South China Sea.
