Digital Ministry in talks with JPJ on autonomous vehicle laws


CYBERJAYA: The Digital Ministry is in discussions with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) on drawing up a legal framework to govern autonomous vehicles, says Gobind Singh Deo.

The Digital Minister said there must be safety regulations and a legal framework in place for autonomous vehicles to operate in Malaysia.

“We held talks with JPJ on how we can assess this and prepare the country for the future so that we are prepared to use this technology,” he said when launching Malaysia’s first Vehicle Forensic Laboratory here on Monday (Sept 8).

Gobind said his ministry has also begun talks with the Transport Ministry on the autonomous vehicle network.

“We will look into developing a legal system that will ensure the autonomous system is safe, as it involves public safety,” he added.

On Sept 9 last year, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government is considering a new law for autonomous vehicles, given advancements in the technology.
