Laos holding digital week to promote digital transformation and innovation

VIENTIANE (Xinhua): Laos will hold a digital week to promote the use of modern technologies in socio-economic development, while raising public awareness of the country's transformation towards modern industries and the development of its digital economy and society.

The event will be held in Lao capital Vientiane from Oct. 21 to 25, bringing together government leaders, businesses, researchers, technology experts, students and entrepreneurs to promote digital transformation and innovation, Lao News Agency on Monday quoted Minister of Technology and Communications Santisouk Simmalavong as saying.

Santisouk said that the world is entering an era in which artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, connectivity, cybersecurity, digital platforms and other technologies have become essential to competition and development across all sectors.

He said digital transformation in Laos is not simply about adopting new technologies, but also about changing the way people, businesses and government agencies think, manage resources and deliver services.

The ultimate goal is to make services more convenient, faster, more transparent and efficient, while helping businesses reduce costs and access markets and ensuring people have greater access to opportunities and services, he added.

He also stressed the importance of narrowing the digital divide between urban and rural areas, improving the quality and affordability of digital services, developing digital skills and strengthening public trust in the country's digital systems.

The Lao Digital Week will feature a wide range of activities, including the Lao Digital Forum, a high-level meeting bringing together Asean leaders, government ministries and local authorities to exchange experiences on digital transformation and discuss cooperation in developing modern systems and services. -- Xinhua
