LAHAD DATU: PKR is reviewing its seat allocation strategy for the Sabah state election following Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s announcement that the coalition will not work with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.
PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic) said discussions are ongoing as Ahmad Zahid had also confirmed Barisan’s continued cooperation with Pakatan Harapan, which affects several constituencies.
“We are still in discussions because there are certain areas with seat issues. There are several matters that need to be resolved,” he said at a press conference during his working visit here yesterday.
Fahmi also said PKR would only reveal its candidates closer to nomination day.
“Pakatan does not announce candidates early – typically, it’s about two weeks before nomination day,” he said.
In June, Sabah PKR chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud reportedly said the party may contest more than 13 seats in the upcoming state election.
On Friday, Ahmad Zahid, who is Umno president, said Sabah Umno and Sabah Barisan Nasional remain firm in their decision not to cooperate with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, while maintaining their partnership with Pakatan.
Ahmad Zahid said the decision was reached after a Sabah Umno political bureau meeting on Thursday.
He said it followed a review of seat negotiations and discussions involving GRS, Barisan and PH leaders, which was chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a meeting held here earlier.
“In that meeting, the Prime Minister stated that, as much as possible, three-cornered fights or overlapping seats should be avoided,” Ahmad Zahid reportedly said.
