KOTA TINGGI: A man has been remanded for seven days on suspicion of throwing a five-year-old girl into a river at Kampung Padang, Tanjung Sedili, on Monday (Sept 21).
The remand order, from Tuesday (Sept 22) until Sept 28, was issued by Sessions Court judge Hafizah Abdul Rajak to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Earlier, the 37-year-old man was treated at Kota Tinggi Hospital before being brought to court at about 9am Tuesday, dressed in a blue T-shirt and escorted by police personnel.
On Monday morning, the five-year-old girl was found dead after she was believed to have been thrown into the river by her uncle at Kampung Padang, Tanjung Sedili, here.
Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the man was believed to have thrown the victim into the river before going on a rampage and chasing a 40-year-old man while armed with a parang.
He said police received a report on the incident at about 9.30am and, upon arriving at the scene, a struggle broke out between the police and the suspect, causing one policeman to be injured. However, the suspect was arrested.
Supt Yusof said an assistant medical officer at the scene confirmed the girl’s death. Her body was sent to Kota Tinggi Hospital before being taken to the Forensic Department of Pasir Gudang Hospital for a post-mortem Tuesday.
He said the suspect was believed to have mental health problems, while the case is being further investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. — Bernama
