JOHOR BARU: A total of 18 cases of illegal disposal and dumping of solid waste with fines totalling RM305,000 have been prosecuted in Johor as of September this year, said state Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon.
He said the figure reflects the determination of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) in strengthening enforcement to combat such acts.
"Indiscriminate dumping is not only illegal but also pollutes the environment and affects the well-being of the local community,” he said in a Facebook post on Saturday (Sept 6).
He said that for the period 2018 to 2024, a total of 89 cases have been brought to court with a cumulative fine of RM1.54 million.
Ling said the Kota Tinggi Sessions Court on Sept 3 had sentenced three individuals for illegally dumping solid waste at several locations in the district.
"The three individuals were separately charged under Section 71(1) of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 [Act 672] and each was fined RM10,000, bringing the total fines paid to RM30,000,” he said. — Bernama
