Unemployed woman loses over RM257,000 to investment scam

JOHOR BARU: A woman has lost over RM250,000 after falling prey to an investment scam here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the 35-year-old unemployed woman was duped into believing she would earn lucrative returns by investing through a company known as 'RP Pro'.

“She first received a message from the suspect, who introduced himself as a representative of the company, on July 7.

“The victim was promised returns of up to 10% of her investment and was instructed to deposit money into several bank accounts,” he said in a statement on Friday (Sept 5).

Believing the offer, the victim made 12 transactions between July 7 and Aug 29, involving RM257,702, added ACP Raub.

“She received a small sum of RM5,850, believed to be a tactic to gain her confidence.

"However, the suspect later demanded further payments and the promised profits were never credited,” he said.

ACP Raub said the victim only realised she had been cheated after losing RM251,852, which came from her savings while working previously as a health product sales representative.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of between one and 10 years, with whipping and a fine upon conviction.

ACP Raub reminded the public not to be easily lured by investment offers promising unusually high returns in a short period of time.

“Always verify through the official Semak Mule portal (https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my) before making payments, and report any suspicious activity to the National Scam Response Centre at 997,” he said.
