Trapped siblings drown after car rolls into river

PORT DICKSON: Two young siblings drowned after they got trapped in a car which suddenly rolled into Sg Linggi near here.

OCPD Supt Maslan Udin said the eight-year-old boy and his six-year-old sister were resting in the car with a couple in their 40s, believed to be their parents, along the riverbank just before the incident.

“Based on the initial investigation, the man got out of the car, which was parked below the Tg Agas bridge, to have a cigarette.

“But the car, although the engine was switched off, suddenly rolled towards the river,” he said.

Supt Maslan said members of the public managed to rescue the woman, but the children were trapped in the car.

He said rescue teams from the Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and Marine Department launched a rescue operation.

“The girl was found at around 1.24pm and the boy about 20 minutes later.

“Medical personnel tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on them but were not successful,” he said.

Supt Maslan added that the case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.
