KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must remain vigilant against forces that threaten to divide the nation along racial and religious lines, says unity advocate Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

He also urged leaders at all levels to act responsibly by promoting inclusiveness and respect, instead of divisive narratives.

Lee said unity is the foundation of peace, progress and prosperity, but achieving true unity is not without obstacles.

"Among the key hurdles are racial and religious polarisation, economic disparities, misinformation on social media, political exploitation of sensitive issues, and the weakening of shared values.

"Irresponsible rhetoric has at times fuelled distrust between communities, while economic gaps have given rise to feelings of neglect and discrimination," he said when contacted on Monday (Sept 1).

He also warned that fake news and hate speech online could quickly spark tensions, and criticised the manipulation of race and religion for political gain.

"A lack of emphasis on shared national identity, mutual respect and compassion makes it difficult to bridge differences and focus on common goals,” he added.

He stressed the need for Malaysia’s education system, media and community institutions to foster greater understanding, tolerance and appreciation of diversity.

"Ultimately, unity cannot be imposed; it must be nurtured through consistent effort, dialogue and a sincere commitment to nation-building.

"If we remain steadfast in upholding the principles of respect, justice and fairness, Malaysia will continue to thrive as a united and harmonious nation," he added.
