Nothing better than the real deal for National Day parade first-timers

PUTRAJAYA: As the first light touched Dataran Putrajaya here, the stretch of road was already abuzz with excitement for the National Day parade.

For many, this event marked a cherished first-time experience, stepping beyond their television screens into the vibrant heart of Malaysia’s celebrations.

Among those experiencing this in person for the first time was Siti Haslina, 31.

Siti Haslina, who works as a transporter, said she wanted to introduce her children to the National Day celebrations here.

“We arrived at about 2am and the area was already packed,” she said when met here yesterday.

“We also made it a point to come this year, as one of our friend’s children was part of the parade,” said Siti, who came together with her neighbour from Taman Medan in Petaling Jaya.

It was also the first time for Aisyah Balqis Jamaludin and Nur Atiqah Jamaludin, who came to experience the display of Malaysian patriotism.

“It has always been our goal to come here for the National Day parade. We’ve always watched the event on television and social media since we were younger. We wanted to experience it in person,” said the sisters, who travelled from Bangsar.

Policeman Mohd Johan Syah came all the way from Bahau in Negri Sembilan for the parade.

“I wanted to let my children have a feel of the celebrations. It’s also my first time attending, and what makes it even more meaningful is that I get to do it together with my family.”

Policewoman Azlinah Ismail, 42, meanwhile said it was her first time being part of the parade from the other side after previously participating in it several years back.

“I used to be part of the motorbike convoy for the police. It’s different to see it from a spectator’s perspective, but the spirit of wanting to join the celebrations never faded,” said the Sabahan who is now serving in Negri Sembilan.

Chinese national Zhao Tianren, 25, wanted to watch the Fire and Rescue Department contingent.

“Definitely ‘Abang Bomba’. We’ve seen them on social media and want to see them in person,” said the university student who came together with his friends.
