PETALING JAYA: Malaysian shuttlers Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei made history by winning the country’s first mixed doubles crown at the World Championships.
Describing their win last night as a National Day gift to Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar congratulated the pair.
“Congratulations to the mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei on their proud achievement at the BWF World Championships 2025.
“Thank you for working hard to bring glory to the country,” Anwar posted on X.
The duo toppled world No. 2, China’s Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin, in the mixed doubles final in Paris, France.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong also congratulated Chen and Toh, calling their historic win an inspiring moment and a gift for Malaysia on National Day.
“With grit, focus and teamwork, they defeated the world’s No. 2 pair, Jiang and Wei, to bring home the world title.
“What an inspiring moment for the nation, and it is truly the best gift on Merdeka Day with this historic win!
“Malaysia is proud of you, Tang Jie and Ee Wei!” he wrote on Facebook.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil also described the victory of the national mixed doubles pair as a meaningful gift in conjunction with the National Day.
He congratulated and expressed gratitude to the Malaysian heroes for their proud achievement on the world stage on Facebook, Bernama reported.
Also at the tournament, women’s doubles Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah too made history by winning the silver medal.
Ecstatic fans congratulated the players for their achievement, particularly the women’s pair by saying that “silver is glorious too!”
One John Lim wrote: “What a story!... from all the controversies, to breaking up, to coming back together again and becoming the World Champion!
“Congrats to Chen and Toh and all Malaysia on your National Day!!!”
Catherine Yau wrote: “It is not easy when you are playing. The girls did a great job, I would say.”
