RMAF's Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter jets to roar at Melaka's National Day celebration

MELAKA: The skies above the historic city roared with the power of jet engines as Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter jets performed a rehearsal flypast on Friday (August 29), giving locals a dramatic preview of what awaits during the state-level National Day celebration.

The combat aircraft from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) were seen flying in formation, drawing crowds of surprised onlookers who paused to watch the powerful display.

Melaka health, human resources and unity committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said the airshow was a highlight that set this year’s celebration apart.

“This was made possible by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, who wanted to raise the benchmark of our state-level National Day celebration.

"His close rapport with the federal leadership has made the dream of Melakans a reality,” he told The Star on Friday (August 29).

Ngwe added that apart from the RMAF, the Fire and Rescue Department would also take part in the aerial display on August 31, a move that reflected the state’s determination to bring the festivities on par with those in Putrajaya.

“We anticipate a celebration of historic proportions this year.

"The Chief Minister is determined to add sparkle to the occasion, and we believe this National Day will reflect both the progress of the state and the patriotic spirit of its people,” he said, adding that the rehearsal sparked excitement across the city, with civil servants and residents rushing outdoors to witness the rare sight.

Hotelier Dennis Samford said he and his staff left their office to watch the jets sweeping across the Klebang coastline.

“It was a thrilling moment for all of us. I even checked FlightRadar24 and saw another RMAF aircraft, believed to be a Hercules C-130, in the skies at the same time,” he said.

Samford said that the state government deserved praise for bringing the festive atmosphere of Putrajaya’s grand celebration to Melaka, giving locals a sense of pride and belonging.
