PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) supports the Second Reading of the Gig Workers Bill in Parliament, calling it an important step and urging policymakers to maintain the flexibility of the platform economy.

“The Gig Workers Bill comes at a critical time,” said MEF president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman (pic) in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 28).

He said the gig economy had become essential and that the MEF supports fair protections for gig workers along with preservation of the gig economy’s flexibility.

He also stated that MEF advised against imposing too many rules that could hinder the sector's growth.

“Excessive compliance costs and rigid employment definitions could deter businesses from engaging gig workers and reduce opportunities for Malaysians seeking supplementary income,” said Syed Hussain, adding that the choice of when, where and how to work must be maintained.

He said that the MEF supports the idea of cooperation between the government, employers, and workers through further discussions.
