Over 200 GROs nabbed in raids nationwide, says Bukit Aman

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 215 foreign guest relation officers were among those detained in a national crackdown on illegal entertainment outlets, says Comm Datuk M. Kumar.

The Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director said the raids, codenamed Ops Noda, were carried out on 87 premises nationwide on Aug 22 and 23.

"The operation was spearheaded by Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department’s Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division together with state Criminal Investigation Department officers and personnel.

"We inspected 87 premises and 66 were found to be operating without valid licences," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 25).

Comm Kumar said owners, workers, patrons as well as 215 foreign guest relation officers were detained, including 76 from Thailand, 65 from Vietnam, 35 from Indonesia, 28 from Myanmar, five from China, four from Cambodia and two from Laos.

"The detained guest relation officers, aged between 22 and 38, were taken to the respective district police headquarters for documentation and further investigations.

"We will intensify such efforts to ensure entertainment premises operate within the law.

"We urge the public to share information to help authorities curb these activities,” he said.
