Six cases of incorrectly displayed flags under probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Six cases of flags being wrongly displayed are currently being investigated by the police.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the cases will be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Chambers for a decision.

“There are two cases each in Johor and Penang, and one each in Selangor and Negri Sembilan.

“The legal process has begun and we have suggested that further action be taken.

“We act based on the law. In the past, there have been many cases beyond our control, such as flag burning and people stepping on flags.

“These laws were enacted to prevent such incidents, as the flag is an entity that must be respected,” he said yesterday.

Recently, a slew of cases involving flags being displayed upside down have caused outrage among Malaysians.

A dental clinic in Pontian got into trouble after it was found displaying the Jalur Gemilang upside down while a similar case occurred at a hardware store in Kepala Batas.

In an unrelated matter, Mohd Khalid said police are still waiting for the chemist report to determine the substance used in the syringe attack on Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli’s son.

““We are conducting a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.

“The CCTV footage has been taken and several angles are still being looked into,” he said, adding that so far, 19 statements have been taken, including from family members.

Regarding the threatening message sent to Rafizi’s wife, the IGP said that the number had been traced to a foreigner.

“We are in the midst of tracing the person,” he said.

On Aug 13, the Pandan MP’s son was assaulted at about 2pm at the pick-up and drop-off area of a mall in Putrajaya.

On the high profile death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Mohd Khalid expressed concern that several personalities have used the case to gain popularity, leading to wrong perceptions of the investigation.

He assured that appropriate disciplinary action by Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) will be taken on those who initially investigated the girl’s death before the deployment of the special task force.
