Fare spike issue resolved, says Grab

PETALING JAYA: Grab Malaysia says it has resolved the issue of abnormally high fares for rides shown on its application on Wednesday (Aug 20).

Refunds of incorrect charges have already been processed, a Grab spokesman said when contacted on Thursday (Aug 21).

The highly inflated prices resulted from a temporary system issue, but the application is now functioning normally, the spokesman added.

“We had safeguards in place that blocked the majority of transactions with incorrect prices.

"For any transactions that went through, we've already processed the refunds.

“We deeply regret any inconvenience caused,” the spokesman added.

Fares on the Grab application spiked by over a hundred times the normal rate in Malaysia and Singapore for a short period.

The issue resulted in displayed fare prices ranging from RM500 to over RM1,500, even for short trips. In Singapore, users were shocked to see fares of over S$1,000 (RM3,280).

It was reported that the unusually high fares were displayed for 20 minutes from around noon.
