Anti-corruption themed film in the works, says MACC chief

PUTRAJAYA: An anti-corruption themed film may be produced, says Tan Sri Azam Baki.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner said three producers have approached him about producing such a film.

"We have met with them and provided several examples of our cases for adaptation," he said during a media session on Thursday (Aug 21).

"However, I told them the actors and actresses must be top notch," he added.

Azam said the film’s story and plot must be compelling and effectively convey the anti-corruption message.

"I told the producers they must be serious about making the film," he said.

"The film must send the right message on anti-corruption and its story must be told in an engaging way," added Azam.

On another matter, Azam said the MACC has proposed installing high-tech closed-circuit television cameras in enforcement agency lock-ups to improve transparency and address allegations of misconduct.

"We proposed this after concerns were raised about corruption, non-compliance, and technical shortcomings in current monitoring practices," he said.

"CCTV, especially those using AI technology, is important for accountability but must also be linked to a proper system and control centre," he said.

He said a more comprehensive proposal will be presented to the government for consideration.

Azam then said that live streaming of corruption trial proceedings to boost public confidence in the judicial process.

"Currently, some people manipulate what happens in court through social media posts. If this reform is agreed, it would be a very good step for government transparency,” said Azam.

"When live streaming is introduced, everyone can see for themselves. If anyone states different or untrue facts, then the offence and the offender can be easily identified," he added.
