TikTok user charged with making false statement about PM

SHAH ALAM: A content creator has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of making a false statement about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

S. Chandrasegaran, a former private school teacher, was charged before judge Norazlin Othman, of making the false statement on his TikTok account on Dec 30, 2024.

The 46-year-old, who is popularly known as Cikgu Chandra, was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act, which is punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act, for misuse of network facilities.

The father of two had made the statement on his "cikguchandra3" TikTok account.

If found guilty, Chandrasegaran can be fined not more than RM50,000, or jailed up to one year and fined an additional RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.

DPP Nurul Sofea Jaysal suggested a bail amount of RM30,000, with an additional condition of having to report to the nearest police station, surrender his passport to the court and not bother the prosecution witnesses.

Chandrasegaran's counsel Muhammad Nor Tamrin asked for a lower bail amount, saying his client was no longer employed after being declared disabled and suffers from throat cancer.

The court fixed bail at RM7,000 with one surety and allowed the additional conditions requested by the prosecution.

Norazlin fixed Oct 13 for next mention.
