Online scams up by 43% from 2020 to 2024, says Home Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: At least 500 calls are received by the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) daily, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said online scams increased by 43% from 2020 to 2024.

Losses, he said, exceeded RM1.5bil with 35,000 victims.

He added that there have already been 527 reported cases of love scams this year, with losses amounting to RM22.5mil.

“Stop any forms of communication that involves sharing an account number or transfers,” he said when winding up debates on the 13th Malaysia Plan on Wednesday (Aug 20).

On another matter, Saifuddin Nasution said nine out of 10 people involved in missing persons cases, were found.

This, he said, was based on police records.

“For every 100 cases, 90 are found. Sometimes, some are reported missing after following their friends out or even arguing with their parents and leaving the house, with the parents later lodging a report.

“However, I am not taking a denial syndrome approach on this.

“For every missing person, the police will use all its resources to solve the case,” he said.

This was in response to Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) who proposed for a new standard operating procedure to resolve missing person cases and other crimes.
