KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry and the Armed Forces will not compromise on illegal activities by their personnel and will cooperate fully with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) after five senior officers were arrested for smuggling.
“The ministry will not tolerate this, more so as these allegations could undermine the safety of the nation,” Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (pic) said.
Khaled stressed that no one was above the law and urged the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“No one is special under the law. I urge the authorities to bring the perpetrators to court.”
The Armed Forces has also given an assurance that it will fully cooperate with the MACC in investigation into suspected involvement of senior officers in a smuggling syndicate in the south of the country.
Armed Forces chief Jeneral Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said the military would not conceal any details from the public.
“The investigations will be thorough and the military will neither shield nor compromise on action against any personnel found to be involved.
“Strict disciplinary measures and legal action will be taken,” he said yesterday.
“Updates on the progress of the investigation and subsequent actions will be announced from time to time,” he added.
Earlier, it was reported that the smuggling ring allegedly involving banned items such as drugs, cigarettes and other contraband, was uncovered after MACC arrested 10 people, including five senior military officers.
The syndicate, believed to have been operating for the past five years, allegedly involved senior officers from the military’s intelligence unit as well as two former members from the same division.
