Thunderstorm warning issued for eight states


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has warned about thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in many parts of the country until 7pm on Monday (Aug 11).

In a statement at 4.35pm on Monday, MetMalaysia said the states affected are Kelantan (Gua Musang); Terengganu (Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun, and Kemaman); Pahang (Maran, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan, and Rompin); Selangor (Hulu Langat); Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Kuala Pilah, and Jempol); and Johor (Mersing).

It also warned of bad weather in Sarawak affecting areas in Sibu (Kanowit and Selangau); Kapit (Song); Bintulu (Tatau); Miri (Telang Usan and Marudi); and Limbang.

In Sabah, the interior regions including Sipitang, Tenom, Nabawan, Keningau, and Tambunan, as well as the West Coast areas of Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, and Ranau, and Sandakan are expected to experience adverse conditions.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour are imminent or expected to last more than an hour.

These are short-term warnings, valid for no more than six hours from issuance.
