Malaysian border agency sends cake to its counterpart across the Causeway to celebrate Singapore's National Day

JOHOR BARU: Malaysia's border agency continues to have a close working relationship with it's Singaporean counterpart and even gifted them a cake and a white orchid in conjunction with the country's 60th National Day.

Malaysian Border Control and Protection (AKPS) assistant commander Vimala Ramalinggam from the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex (BSI) headed a team of officers to present the 6kg cake and a potted orchid to their counterparts at the Woodlands checkpoint on Saturday (Aug 9).

The colourful cake, which also had a message of "Peace, Unity and Friendship Forever" was presented to Woodlands Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) assistant commander Tan Zhaofeng.

The symbolic handover was done in front of the Woodlands Checkpoint.

The orchid is Singapore's national flower and the Island Republic celebrated its 60th National Day on Saturday.

Each year, the two agencies send cakes to commemorate each other's national day celebrations.

They also organise regular visits and exchange programmes to enhance cooperation in managing one of the world's busiest land crossings.

Besides BSI in Johor Baru, the other land checkpoint with Singapore is the Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ complex in the Second Link.

Traffic has been heavy since Friday for those entering Malaysia due to the long weekend holiday, and on Sunday for those returning back.
