Sibu cops launch probe into death of two-year-old boy who fell into manhole


SIBU: Two investigations have been opened into the death of a two-year-old boy who died after falling into a manhole in Jalan Wong Soon Kai here.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said one of the investigations is being conducted under Section 3(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for negligence or exposing a child in a manner likely to cause physical or emotional harm.

The other has been classified as a sudden death report (SDR).

“Anyone found guilty under Section 3(1)(a) may face a fine of up to RM20,000, a prison sentence of up to 10 years, or both,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (August 6).

ACP Zulkipli confirmed that they had received a report from a medical officer at Sibu Hospital at about 11.09pm on Monday (August 4) regarding the incident.

“The boy's lifeless body was pulled up from the drain by firefighters on Monday evening and sent to Sibu Hospital. He was found wet, pale, and unresponsive upon arrival at the Emergency Unit, where he was later pronounced dead,” he said.

He added that investigations are ongoing to identify any parties who may be involved. Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact Investigating Officer ASP Mohd Adzmei Ahmad at 019-7192529 or approach the nearest police station.
