Collision claims lives of couple en route to Segamat


SEGAMAT: A jewellery shop owner and his wife were killed in a car accident while travelling from Kuantan to Segamat.

Segamat OCPD Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah confirmed that the victims were Mohd Izuddin Harmaini, 51, and his 35-year-old wife, Nur Syamimi Rosli.

The incident was said to have occurred at 1.46pm on Monday (Aug 4). The couple’s car reportedly skidded off the road and crashed into two electric poles at KM13, Jalan Utama-Simpang Felda Pemanis.

“The couple sustained severe injuries and died on the spot,” said Supt Ahmad Zamry, adding that the investigation was ongoing.

Segamat Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Abd Rahim Taufik said six firemen and a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) arrived at the scene 18 minutes after receiving an emergency call and found the husband and wife trapped inside the vehicle.

After extricating them from the vehicle, their bodies were handed over to the police.

The police urged witnesses with information regarding the incident to contact the Segamat District Police Traffic Department at 07-9325811.

In a separate accident, three people were injured while another escaped unhurt after two trailer lorries collided with a car on Monday.

According to Renggam Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Ahmad Syawal, the incident took place near the Simpang Renggam rest and service area on the North-South Expressway at 4.23pm.

Four firemen and a fire truck (FRT) were deployed to the scene, located 51km away from the fire station.

“The 40-year-old container trailer driver was found trapped in the driver’s seat as a result of the crash. He was successfully extricated and handed over to the Health personnel for medical treatment.

“Two car passengers, aged 26 and 27, from a car sustained only minor injuries, while the 42-year-old driver of the second trailer was unharmed,” he said.
