Cambodia, Thai leaders laud peace efforts

PUTRAJAYA: The successful peace negotiations between Cambodia and Thailand is a pivotal step towards restoring harmony and stability between the two countries, say the nations’ leaders.

Expressing hope that the immediate ceasefire will set the stage for a return to normalcy, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet described the meeting with his Thai counterpart as “good with very good results”.

“(We) hope to stop the fighting that has caused many lives (to be) lost and people displaced.

“We hope that the solutions Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim just announced will set a condition for bilateral discussions to move forward, for a return to normalcy, and as the foundation for future de-escalation of forces,” he said at a joint press conference in Sri Perdana here yesterday.

Thanking leaders and governments who were involved in the peace efforts, including Anwar, US President Donald Trump and China, Hun Manet said Cambodia values America’s efforts and thanks its government for co-organising this crucial meeting in support of peace.

“I also wish to thank the government of China for their efforts and participation in this process in order to achieve the positive outcome today.

“I also thank (acting) Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai for his positive role in the constructive dialogue that we had today, leading to the agreement,” he added.

Phumtham offered brief but firm remarks, expressing appreciation for Malaysia’s role and reiterating Thailand’s commitment to peace.

“I sincerely appreciate Prime Minister Anwar and today’s outcome.

“Thailand remains committed to a peaceful resolution, in good faith, to protect our sovereignty and our people,” he said.
