East Asia Summit declarations to boost cooperation to be adopted during Asean Summit, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: Several key declarations will be tabled for adoption in October’s Asean Summit after being agreed at the 15th East Asia Summit, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

He added that this move reflected a collective commitment to deepen cooperation among EAS member countries.

“We have agreed to adopt several declarations to further empower EAS cooperation.

“This also follows the statement by the Prime Minister on the need for concrete actions,” he told reporters after the EAS here on Friday (July 11).

Mohamad said the collective initiative can further enhance the East Asian platform.

Earlier, he said that EAS has become increasingly relevant and vital since its inception 20 years ago, particularly amidst today’s complex crises.

He noted that global and regional dynamics have shifted, posing challenges to the strength of the summit’s member states.

The EAS comprises eighteen participating countries, including 10 Asean Member States and Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America.
